Street Feast launches new nationwide event to celebrate community
This coming week will see the launch of Street Feast, a new nationwide event to celebrate community. Street Feast is an annual celebration that will take place for the first time on July 18th 2010.
“The idea is simple - on Sunday the 18th of July we’re inviting people all over Ireland to host a local lunch with their neighbours, to celebrate their street, area or community” Jerrieann, one of the co-founders explains. “Each Street Feast is self-organised, and will be as different as the neighbourhood that hosts it. So far people are planning Street Feasts in Dublin,Wicklow, Wexford, Cork, Galway and Tipperary, with more popping up everyday.”
Street Feast has been set up by a small team of volunteers this year. It aims to connect people in their communities through the act of sharing food. To get involved, people can download the Street Feast guide from the website, print off invitations & posters, and stick a pin in the online map to show where and when their feast will be taking place.
“Street Feast is about having more life on the streets. It’s an all-for-fun, not-for-profit, do-it-yourself celebration” said co-founder Sam Bishop from Co.Wicklow. “There has never been a better excuse to talk to people who live near you. It’s easy- just log on to streetfeast.ie to get involved.”
“Street Feast is a chance to sit down with people you probably see every day but never talk to” said James Parrott, Street Feast’s chef for the launch this week. “Sharing food is a great way to build friendships and break down barriers.”
